Your washing machine is the center of your laundry room and keeps your clothes clean.

Here are some tips for taking care of your washing machine.

Replace water hoses.

Washing machine hoses typically last only 3-5 years. A hose that bursts could lead to substantial flooding inside your home. Inspect them on a regular basis for signs of wear. If replacing, consider braided stainless steel hoses over rubber hoses. Braided stainless steel hoses are more durable.

Move the machine

Make sure there are at least four inches between your washing machine and the wall. This prevents hoses from kinking.

Level your machine

An off-kilter washing machine can vibrate or rock across the floor during spin cycles, which can lead to floor or machine damage. Balance the washer by turning its legs clockwise to lower it and counterclockwise to raise it.

Wash the washing machine

Check your washing machine’s manual for recommended cleanings and keep a regular cleaning schedule. Some washers have filters that need to be drained and cleaned on a regular basis.

Prevent musty odors and mildew

Leave the washer lid or door open between loads to keep the unit dry and smelling fresh. On front-loading washers, wipe down the door’s rubber seal after doing your laundry.

Don’t overload the machine

Use the appropriate amount of water for the size of each load. Also wash heavy or bulky items in smaller loads, as these may be more demanding on the appliance.
